The famed Enlightenment philosopher Voltaire is often attributed with the saying, “I disapprove of what you say but will defend to the death your right to say it.” While this is one of the most celebrated quotes on the subject of free speech of this era, it’s clear today that its power is fading away.
Liberal elites across the country, and in particular Silicon Valley, are calling for more regulation of speech online. Google is leading the way and recently launched a new tool for journalists to better cover “hate speech” online. While this may seem like a noble idea at first, there are growing concerns that this tool will be used to censor conservatives. Given Google’s penchant for silencing those on the right who don’t fully conform to their agenda, we must be vigilant of what appears to be another weapon in the arsenal of the liberal thought police.
In a statement online, data editor of Google News Labs, Simon Rogers, said that their new “project launched in response to the lack of national data on hate crimes.” In other words, they’re trying to fill in these gaps and assert themselves in places the government has previously not thought to do so. But Google’s efforts are already incredibly flawed.
According to reporting from PJ Media, prominent conservative websites have been listed as “hate speech” under the current guidelines. From Breitbart to the National Review, and Daily Caller to the Washington Examiner, data has shown that Google’s new project will be yet again another assault on the First Amendment rights of conservatives. As always, the tech-left is showing how incapable they are of separating their own agenda from how they treat their users.
Aside from the articles that Google’s new tool will flag as alleged “hate speech,” the very people behind this effort should be cause for great concern. Google has partnered with ultra-liberal organizations like the Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC), ProPublica, and Buzzfeed News.
ProPublica, a conduit of the liberal agenda masquerading as an investigative journalism site, is funded by leftists like George Soros and other special interests. Even worse, the Southern Poverty Law Center has been known to label groups advocating for things like traditional marriage or pro-life causes as hate groups. In fact, they once added Ben Carson to their “Extremist Watch List.” A record of outlandish action like this begs the question: Are these really the people we want regulating our internet and flagging “hate speech?”
Any decent, First Amendment-loving American understands that no company with a political agenda should be able to impose their way on the rest of the country. Conservatives must stand up against Silicon Valley liberals like Google who seek to censor us online and cement their power through support of so-called “Net Neutrality” laws.
In order to truly keep the internet free, Americans must make their voices heard. The cost of remaining silent is far too great. If we let the tech-left succeed in taking control of the people’s internet, we’d better get used to the phrase “I disagree with what you say and I’ll work my hardest to make sure you’re BANNED from saying it!”
