What Is GPS Navigation?

Thursday, 09 December 2010 02:18 PM EST

The Global Positioning System (GPS) is a satellite-based navigation system that determines your current location through GPS signals. The GPS navigation system devices find use in several applications in the fields of military, marine, aviation, tracking, and surveillance.

The GPS navigation system is made up of a network of 24 satellites placed in orbit by the U.S. Department of Defense. It provides reliable location and time information at any position on or near the Earth’s surface, at any time, under all weather conditions. It is maintained by the Federal Government. Anyone with a GPS receiver can access the information for free.

The GPS navigation software can be used on laptops and portable devices with an attached GPS receiver. Most of the commercially available GPS navigation software products run only on Windows and Mac OS X. There are various GPS navigation software products designed for use on land and in water.

Portable GPS navigation systems are also available. These give flexibility to the user and can be used by people while travelling in vehicles. A GPS navigation device comes in use on trekking, hunting, camping, and fishing trips. Portable GPS navigation devices are small enough to fit into your pocket.

At times, while driving, the voice-activated GPS navigator will tell you where exactly you are and give you the exact directions on the route to be followed. The GPS navigation is available for cars at very competitive prices and improved features. These GPS navigation car systems have attractive interfaces and are user friendly.

TomTom XL 340 S, Magellan RoadMate 1470, Garmin Nuvi 3790T, and Motorola MotoNav TN765T are some of the many GPS navigation systems for cars. The latest models allow users to access real-time updates on the weather and road conditions. Alternative mounting solutions and home chargers are also available. You can also upgrade the maps and subscribe to free traffic alerts. The new devices come with 3D building and terrain views. Some of the GPS navigation systems can even be detached from cars and carried around as portable GPS navigation devices. Portable GPS navigation devices are pretty much versatile.

Mobile GPS navigation systems are used by a lot of people these days, especially during long drives and road trips. Many people now use mobile GPS navigation devices like GPS phones that are equipped with a GPS chip.

Thus, GPS navigation represents technical advancement that has made driving, movement, and tracking very convenient.
