By    |   Tuesday, 14 June 2016 08:53 AM EDT

Asking travelers to weigh in on the world's most overrated vacation destinations sparks passionate and widely varying responses, according to The Huffington Post. Narrowing the debate to cruise ports is even more difficult.

Here are seven most overrated cruise destinations:

Latest: What's Your Favorite Type of Vacation? Relaxing or Exploring?

1. The Caribbean — Huffington Post travel writer David Landsel named the Caribbean among 10 overrated vacation destinations, calling many islands expensive, violent, corrupt, and dysfunctional. Instead, he suggested that travelers head to Mexico.

2. Cancun — Not all Mexican destinations are created equal, according to MainStreet, which lamented that Cancun "was developed from scratch by Mexico to lure tourists." MainStreet recommended skipping the "touristy and overcrowded" Cancun in favor of the Mayan ruin of Tulum.

3. Venice, Italy — Travelers voted this celebrated cruise port among the most disappointing travel destinations on Earth, calling it expensive, polluted, crowded, and full of scammers, according to Fox News. One Reddit user even called the city "Disneyland for middle-aged American yuppies."

4. Nassau, Bahamas — Miami lawyer Jim Walker singled out Nassau on his Cruise Law News website as the most dangerous cruise destination in the world noting that "(w)e receive more complaints about crime in Nassau than all of the other ports in the Caribbean combined."

5. Prince Rupert, Canada — Cruiseline.com gave this port a thumbs down, saying the city's commercial fishing and mill town roots left much to be desired. While a shore excursion to a grizzly bear sanctuary has gained popularity, one traveler lamented the lack of activities, telling Cruiseline.com: "We visited the Safeway and the Seven-Eleven."

6. Ochos Rios, Jamaica — After climbing Dunn's River Falls, Cruise Critic suggests there is nothing left to do at this port, named among its 7 Worst Cruise Ports for a Return Visit. Instead, Cruise Critic suggests venturing to nearby Saint Ann Parish to visit Bob Marley's Mausoleum.

7. Monte Carlo, Monaco
— While this European destination boasts the Grimaldi Royal Family and the Monte Carlo Casino, it has little to hold the interest of travelers, according to Cruise Critic, which noted: "There's only so many times you can gawk at the Grand Casino before ennui sets in."
