With the third open-enrollment period for health insurance upon us and 11.7 percent of the U.S. population still lacking coverage, the personal finance website WalletHub conducted an in-depth analysis of 2015’s States with the Highest & Lowest Uninsured Rates.

For the second year in a row, WalletHub’s analysts drew upon the most reliable data to estimate the rates of uninsured pre- and post-Obamacare for the 50 states and the District of Columbia. For a broad perspective of those rates, we broke the national figures down to the state level and other categories, including age, race and income level.

Health Insurance Coverage in Florida:

• Obamacare reduced the children’s uninsured rate by 26.47 percent between 2010 and 2014.
• Obamacare reduced the adult uninsured rate by 21.85 percent between 2010 and 2014.
• The uninsured rate for whites is 36.62 percent lower than that for blacks.
• The uninsured rate for whites is 52.93 percent lower than that for Hispanics.
• The uninsured rate for higher-income households is 66.54 percent lower than that for lower-income households.
• The rate of publicly insured is 38.06 percent.
• The rate of privately insured is 61.94 percent.
• The rate of employer-based health insurance coverage decreased by 0.45 percent between 2010 and 2014.
• The uninsured rate pre-Obamacare was 21.26 percent and has fallen to a current rate of 16.57 percent, with 695,899 persons gaining health insurance coverage.

But if too many big health insurers follow UnitedHealth Group Inc.’s lead and sour on Obamacare, the industry may finish the job Republicans began five years ago: crippling President Barack Obama’s signature domestic accomplishment.

UnitedHealth, the largest U.S. insurer by market value, said Thursday that it expects to lose as much as $500 million selling coverage under the Affordable Care Act next year, and that it may exit the program in 2017. While most insurers don’t yet turn a profit on the health law’s plans, no other large carriers have threatened to quit the program.

Republicans saw in the insurer’s announcement a confirmation of their own warnings about the law.

“Even if we don’t get a full repeal, I think this shows it will collapse from its own weight,” Representative John Fleming, a Louisiana Republican, told Bloomberg.
