A new
Emerson College poll shows Jeb Bush and John Kasich making dramatic gains in New Hampshire, though Donald Trump continues to hold the lead among Granite State Republicans.
Here are the results of the poll of 373 registered GOP voters conducted Monday and Tuesday:
- Donald Trump: 35 percent
- Jeb Bush: 18 percent
- John Kasich: 14 percent
- Marco Rubio: 9 percent
- Ted Cruz: 8 percent.
- Chris Christie: 5 percent.
The numbers, while confirming Trump's dominance in most early surveys, bolster Bush and Kasich campaigns struggling to gain traction.
The poll also shows discouraging trends for Rubio, who has sat in third place in most polls, and Cruz, who was in second place in New Hampshire in a previous Emerson poll.
"Bush's performance may have been helped by the heavy spending on attack ads by his super PAC," said Marion Kinosian, an Emerson College junior who worked on the poll.
The former Florida governor's super PAC, Right to Rise, has spent more than $65 million on attack ads, including $12 million in New Hampshire, according to OpenSecrets.org.
In other results, Republicans were asked whether Sarah Palin's endorsement last week of Trump would sway their vote for the current front-runner:
- Less likely to vote for Trump: 55 percent
- More likely: 15 percent
- No effect: 30 percent.
Among the 350 Democrats surveyed, here are the results:
- Bernie Sanders: 52 percent
- Hillary Clinton: 44 percent.
The margin of error in the Emerson College poll was 5 percent for Republicans and 5.2 percent for Democrats.
