After Donald Trump's
controversial remarks on Mexican immigrants, Felix Sanchez, the head of the National Hispanic Foundation for the Arts, questioned why other GOP presidential candidates, especially Jeb Bush, Marco Rubio and Ted Cruz, did not come out swinging,
Mediaite reports.
"The Hispanic community is tired of being the scapegoat of the Republican Party and to be accused of all these kinds of crimes," Sanchez said on
CNN's "New Day" on Tuesday.
"Why didn’t Jeb Bush, whose wife is Mexican and whose children are Mexican-American, be livid about this and come out swinging immediately?
"Why didn’t [Marco] Rubio and [Ted] Cruz look at this and say 'We’re Cuban but this is a Mexican-American community, let’s align with the Mexican-American community … and go after this issue?'"
In the news conference announcing his bid for the Republican nomination earlier this month, Trump asserted that many Mexicans and other illegals coming across the border are "rapists" and bringing in drugs.
According to Mediaite, Sanchez did not limit himself to wondering about the whereabouts of GOP candidates on the issue. He also questioned why Hillary Clinton and Bernie Sanders weren't stronger in reacting to Trump's comments.
Chris Cuomo, the co-host of "New Day," suggested that other candidates did not speak up to avoid legitimizing Trump's campaign.
While Sanchez agreed, he also added, "Across the board, the people who could have spoken didn’t," Mediaite reports.
