Kim Davis, the Kentucky county clerk jailed since Thursday for refusing to issue marriage licenses to same-sex couples, is in good spirits and is sharing Scripture with her supporters, according to Liberty Counsel, which is providing her with legal support.
"I had an amazing visit with Kim. She exudes gentleness and is at peace. Her spirits remain high," Liberty Counsel's chief litigation counsel Harry Mihet said after visiting her Sunday. "She was brought to tears when she heard that so many people outside the jail and around the country are praying for her."
Davis, who says same-sex marriage conflicts with her Christian beliefs, has been reading the Bible during her incarceration, and said she wanted to share 2 Timothy 1:7-8 with the public. The Scripture, written by the Apostle Paul while imprisoned for preaching the gospel, says, "God did not give us the spirit of fear, but of power and love and self-control. Therefore, do not be ashamed of the testimony about our Lord, nor of me his prisoner, but share in the suffering for the gospel and the power of God."
Although supporters have called Davis a hero and critics have accused her of wanting to be a martyr, neither is true, said Mat Staver, founder and chairman of Liberty Counsel.
"Kim bristles at the thought," Staver said. "She loves God, loves people, and loves her job. She remains faithful to all three, and that is why she is here in jail. She may be a prisoner because of her faith, but Kim is freer than most Americans."
A rally will be held for Davis at 3 p.m. Tuesday outside the Carter County Detention Center in Grayson, Kentucky, where Davis is being held. Republican presidential candidate
Mike Huckabee, who has been a vocal supporter of Davis, plans to attend.
Meanwhile, news organizations are seeking permission from the judge to interview Davis from jail.
Mediaite reports that CNN and ABC have filed motions to talk to the clerk and that Davis and her lawyers have agreed to the interviews.
