Hillary Clinton leads Donald Trump by 2 points with an electorate that is "reluctant" and quite unsure of how it will vote, according to a new George Washington University Battleground poll.

Clinton leads Trump 42 percent to 40 percent, but additional poll results paint a murky picture:

  • 59 percent said they would "reluctantly vote for the candidate of the party you usually support;"
  • 45 percent said they might split their ticket;
  • 13 percent said they might not vote at all.

The poll also found Clinton to be more favorable than Trump — 43 percent to 38 percent.

However, Trump leads Clinton on questions of character:

  • On "saying what they believe," Trump rated higher than Clinton, 59 percent to 30 percent;
  • Trump leads on "honest and trustworthy," 39 percent to 35 percent;
  • Trump leads by 1 point on the question of "being a strong leader."

But Clinton leads 57 percent to 31 percent on "temperament needed to serve."

"Were Donald Trump a more traditional Republican candidate who was running a more traditional presidential campaign, this data suggests he could win by a notable margin," pollster Ed Goeas said.

The poll surveyed 1,000 registered likely voters nationwide Aug. 28-Sept. 1, and it has a margin of error of plus or minus 3.1 percentage points.
