Gross: Nation Can't Afford Obamacare's Burden

By    |   Monday, 22 March 2010 08:02 PM EDT

The Supreme Court will overturn the healthcare bill, assuming it passes in Congress, because it’s unconstitutional, says social scientist Martin Gross.

The New York Times best-selling author told Newsmax.TV that the bill violates the rights of states and individuals as laid out in the 10th amendment.

The amendment reads, “The powers not delegated to the United States by the Constitution, nor prohibited by it to the States, are reserved to the States respectively, or to the people.”

“That’s why states are suing, because they can’t afford Mr. Obama’s largesse,” Gross says.

Unless Obama packs the court with two more liberals, it will strike down the healthcare package, he says.

“I predict the Supreme Court will rule the whole thing unconstitutional, because of states’ rights being violated with new Medicaid patients and also because of the individual rights.”

Gross points out that forcing Americans to buy something isn’t sanctioned in the constitution.

“They’re trying to make the constitution a discarded piece of paper. But it occasionally, and in this case I think will, reverts back to power. And Mr. Obama will be foiled.”

The healthcare reform is a budget buster that will end in higher property taxes, says Gross, who has testified six times to Congress about wasteful spending.

The Congressional Budget Office says the plan will cut the budget deficit by $130 billion. “That’s absolutely false,” Gross says. The actual cost will be $2 trillion-$3 trillion, but the CBO constantly underestimates costs.

“That’s catastrophic,” he adds. “Americans will be much worse off.”

The states, which pay for 43 percent of Medicaid, will be forced to put 16 million new people into the program. “States don’t have the money,” Gross says.

“There won’t be any medical care for these people, because most doctors won’t take Medicaid.” Doctors receive as little as $26 per visit for a Medicaid patient in Michigan.

So doctor reimbursements will have to increase by 40 percent, which will cost states at least $500 billion.

The result?

“Very simple: your property taxes go up,” Gross says.

“It’s the fastest growing tax in America. It’s tripled in real dollars since 1960. The states suffer, they cut back on school aid, and the local district then simply raises the property taxes.”

States already were in bad shape, Gross points out, and now they’ll have to care more for the indigent.

“There aren’t the doctors, there aren’t the nurse practitioners, there aren’t the physician assistants, and there isn’t the money,” Gross says.

He says Medicare cutbacks will end up at $1 trillion and cause great harm. Young people who opt out of insurance to save money will benefit from reform at the expense of the elderly.

“There’s no death panel, but when people can’t go to their doctor and can’t get care for the aged, then you’ll find that the death panel takes place because of economics. It’s a disaster.”

Healthcare reform will cost at least $3 trillion, inflating an already massive budget deficit, Gross says.

“America is in worse shape than Greece.” That’s because Greece’s budget deficit totals about 12 percent of GDP, and America’s about 13 percent, Gross says.

“Mr. Obama is a fiscal madman and continues to spend money. We can’t afford it.”

Healthcare also has torn apart the country socially, Gross says. The country is divided right down the middle between socialism and democratic capitalism.

“Tea party (activists), who aren’t all Republicans – many are just ordinary non-political people -- are aroused,” Gross said.

“They see the constitution being torn to shreds, and their rights are being taken by what James Madison called the tyranny of the majority.”

Bottom line, Gross said, “Washington has now become the absolute, ferocious enemy of the American people.”

Gross, author of the recent book “National Suicide: How Washington Is Destroying the American Dream from A to Z,” has contempt for both the Democratic and Republican Parties – especially the Democrats.

“The Democratic Party has moved left and left. It’s really now the socialist party. The Democratic Party is subversive, anti-American. And the Republican Party is often stupid.”
