A potential compromise on DACA (Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals) can become "the beginning of the end of the immigration wars," Eric Cantor, a former Republican House majority leader, wrote in an opinion piece in The New York Times.
"It is well past time for Republicans to stand up to those on the right who are quick to denounce any sensible solution as amnesty, and for Democrats to stand up to those on the left who rail against any meaningful steps toward border security and immigration enforcement," Cantor concluded in his piece published Saturday and echoed Sunday via Twitter.
"The fate of the Dreamers presents a unique opportunity for both parties to do just that."
While rejecting the "likelihood" Washington will "keep the status quo," Cantor called for the extremes on both sides to meet in the middle – "the sort of deal that the extreme wings of both parties will oppose, but it is exactly the type of sensible compromise the nation needs" –exchanging DACA protections and clarity for enhanced funding for border security.
"Only Congress can fix this mess," Cantor wrote. "It should do so by providing a path for law-abiding Dreamers to obtain a green card and ultimately, full citizenship. In exchange for a much improved program for Dreamers, Congress should significantly increase America's border security by funding additional personnel, technology, and physical resources at our border."
