House Speaker John Boehner is perfectly content to see the media eviscerate Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Texas, amid the congressional impasse over the budget and debt ceiling, former House Speaker Newt Gingrich said Monday.
"I think he's quite happy to have the news media attack Ted Cruz instead of attacking him," Gingrich, co-host of CNN's "Crossfire," told Washington radio station WMAL.

"I don't think Boehner thinks of himself as a national personality in the way that Cruz does."
Gingrich said Cruz has established a definite career path for himself as leader of the GOP's conservative faction.
"This is a freshman senator who is emerging about as fast as Barack Obama did when he was a freshman senator," Gingrich said. "I think Cruz will be a very formidable player."
The Texas freshman has drawn the ire of some fellow Republicans in his quest to defund Obamacare at all costs,
Politico reports.
