Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton told supporters in a fundraising plea on Wednesday that she could "lose" contests in Iowa and New Hampshire — and that would force her campaign to "dig in and work that much harder to make sure we win the nomination."

"It's time to be realistic about the resources we still need to be ready," Clinton said in an email blast via Hillary for America, " because right now, winning this nomination is no sure thing."

The email asks for an immediate $1 contribution to help raise $2 million by the end of the year.

The Iowa caucuses will be held Feb. 1 in the first contest of the 2016 presidential primary season. New Hampshire holds its primaries the following week, on Feb. 9.

"The contests in Iowa and New Hampshire will be here faster than you can believe (or at least faster than I can!)," Clinton said in the email.

It ends with "thanks — now let's go and win. Hillary."
