Florida Sen. Marco Rubio and Kentucky Sen. Rand Paul fought over taxes and military spending at Tuesday's GOP presidential debate, with Paul saying Rubio's plans weren't conservative.

Rubio laid out his plan for tax-write offs for families, but Paul interjected, "How is it conservative?"

As Paul continued to press, Rubio accused Paul of being an isolationist, bringing a laugh from Paul.

"Marco! Marco! How is it conservative, how is it conservative to add a trillion dollar expenditure for the federal government that you're not paying for? How is it conservative?" Paul said. "How is it conservative to add a trillion dollars in military expenditures? You cannot be a conservative if you're going to keep promoting new programs you're not going to pay for."

Texas Sen. Ted Cruz suggested a "middle ground" that cut taxes and paid for the military.

"You think defending this nation is expensive, try not defending it? That's a lot more expensive," Cruz said.
