The 29-year-old terror attack suspect in New York City that killed eight people and injured more than a dozen others left a note in the rented flatbed truck claiming to carry out the incident for the Islamic State, according to local news reports.

Law enforcement sources said the man, identified by media organizations as Sayfullo Habibullaevic Saipov, had no knowledge of any terror groups claiming responsibility for the attack, News 4 New York reports.

Fox News Channel reported Saipov also had a knife he did not use.

Fox's Shepard Smith reported that a black bag fell out of the rental truck when Saipov got out, and when the bag was opened a knife fell out.

"It was described as a hunting knife. I saw a picture of it," Smith said on Fox News' "Hannity." "It was in a black leather sheath with what appeared to be a belt buckle holder. So he could have held it on his belt, but he didn't."

Smith said authorities on the scene are wondering why Saipov brandished a paint gun and BB gun when he had a knife with him that could have caused more damage.

New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo said Saipov was thought to have acted alone.

He lived in Paterson, New Jersey, but had a Florida license with a Tampa address when he was arrested, authorities told News 4.

Federal, state, and local law enforcement were seen swarming the neighborhood where Saipov was thought to live Tuesday evening.

Area residents told the station he had a wife and two young children.

Saipov reportedly came to the United States from Uzbekistan in 2010.

He was shot by a uniformed officer in the attack and remained under arrest and treatment at a local hospital.

According to the report, Saipov pleaded guilty to two traffic offenses in Pennsylvania between 2012 and 2015.

He was also arrested for a traffic incident in Missouri, though details of that arrest were not readily available, News 4 reported.

No other information was available on whether Saipov had any other criminal offenses.
