New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie reportedly assured the publisher of the New Hampshire Union Leader he'd "never" endorse GOP presidential front-runner Donald Trump – and his turnabout suggests he "hasn't come clean."
Publisher Joe McQuaid
tells Politico the day after the Feb. 9 Granite State primary – when Christie
dropped out of the primary race after a poor showing despite
the backing of the Union Leader – a mutual acquaintance told him Christie intended to endorse the New York real estate billionaire.
"So I sent a message off to Gov. Christie and he called me right back and I told him what I'd heard, and he said 'No, no, I would never do that,'" McQuaid tells Politico.
"[Christie] told me to tell the other guy to 'take his head out of his ass' for saying he would support Trump."
McQuaid tells Politico he's now "disappointed" in the change of heart, and said his endorsement is not transferable.
"I'm now suspecting him of being involved in the Lindbergh baby kidnapping," McQuaid joked, Politico reports.
"It's like [Mitt] Romney says about Trump and his taxes. I think there's something there. Christie hasn't come clean."
