Rand Paul: 'My Every Waking Hour Is to Try to Stop Donald Trump'

Sen. Rand Paul is vowing to spend "every waking hour" trying to keep rival Donald Trump from getting the GOP presidential nomination – and robbing the party of a White House win.

In an interview Thursday on Fox News' "The Alan Colmes Show," the Kentucky lawmaker insisted Trump is taking the GOP in the wrong direction.

The remarks begin at about the 6-minute mark.

"I think we, the Republican Party, becomes the party of angry people that insinuate that most immigrants are drug dealers or rapists, that’s a terrible direction for our party," he said. "We’re never going to grow as a party. We’re never going to increase our vote among the Hispanic population, the black population, among women all those things we need to expand our party.

"Donald Trump takes us in the wrong direction. He would be a disaster. We’ll be slaughtered in a landslide. That’s why my every waking hour is to try to stop Donald Trump from being our nominee."

Paul said he would, however, support Trump if he became the party's standard-bearer.

"It sounds terrible, 'Oh you're going to support Donald Trump,' but I expect Donald Trump to support me as well if I win," he said.

The libertarian-leaning Paul also said he'll stick with the GOP rather than support Libertarian Party candidate Gary Johnson.

"I’ve worked very hard to make the Republican party more libertarian and more constitutionally conservative," he said. "And I think it’s been for a good thing."
