Rush Blasts Budget Deal, GOP

By    |   Monday, 11 April 2011 12:46 PM EDT

Talk radio pundit Rush Limbaugh blasts the federal budget agreement reached on Friday, saying that if spending cuts total only $38 billion there is going to be “hell to pay” with tea party activists who want much deeper cuts.

He also criticizes the GOP for compromising with Democrats, and says if they continue to “cave” it will be a “disaster” for conservatives in promulgating their agenda.

On his Monday show, Limbaugh began his discussion of the budget agreement by saying that the tea party has changed the entire debate.

“I never thought I’d see a day when the budget is the primary focus of interest in the United States of America,” he said. “The tea party has changed all of that.

“But 38 billion? What happened to the campaign promise of $100 billion?”
Rush said he told an audience Friday night that “if $38 billion is it, there’s going to be hell to pay. This is not going to be satisfactory, not when we accrue $38 billion in debt in two and a half days.”

He said on Monday: “The deal is done. The debate has shifted from spending to cutting $38 billion. I’m sorry I can’t start throwing parties over it, but it’s a first step.

“But I wish they had kept their promise. I wish it had been $100 billion.
“If the lesson learned from this is that the way to go is compromise with the left, then it’s going to be a disaster.

The left is not going to compromise on the redistribution of wealth or income or tax increases for the wealthy. They are not going to compromise on their core belief. They have to be defeated. And by defeat I mean more and more election victories like we had in November.”

Limbaugh is concerned that Republicans will also be willing to compromise with Democrats on lifting the ceiling on federal debt.

“I know the next fight’s the debt limit and they’re saying this was chump change, this was billions, the next one’s trillions,” he said. “But we’ve shown we will cave if they threaten something like government shutdown.”

But he expressed hope that Democrats might also be willing to cave: “What we drove this debate was the 2012 elections. The Democrats are scared spitless. They know the public wants cuts. They know the tea party’s not a bunch of fringe, kooks, oddballs. They know that many Democratic voters are members of the tea party.

“The Democrats know there has not been a big shift in public opinion since November. The tea party has changed the debate, possibly for a long time.”
