British citizens can thank Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher for giving them hope, instilling them with pride and making their lives more livable, says Nigel Evans, the deputy speaker of Parliament.
“Individual responsibility and caring for others . . . is just something that Margaret Thatcher desperately believed in,’’ Evans told Newsmax TV’s “The Steve Malzberg Show.’’
Story continues below.
“I do look at other politicians we’ve had before and after and very few have lent their names to a philosophy which actually strokes at the very heart of why I am in politics to begin with.
“That you ensure that . . . people have the freedom to choose where they send their youngsters to school, that they have the freedom to live their lives without the desperation of daily strife.’’
Evans remembered how one evening Thatcher walked into a room of politicians who were discussing her accomplishments over the years.
“One of my colleagues said to her, Margaret, if you had your time over again, what would you have done differently?’’ he recalled.
“And she sort of reflected on this for a second or two and then said, ‘Well, actually I thought I did rather well the first time around!’’’
Evans said he was “proud to call myself a Thatcherite.’’
