As President Barack Obama delivered his first public remarks since Donald Trump's stunning victory, White House staffers watching him cried, The Washington Post reported.

Obama asked Americans who were upset with the election results to "keep their heads up." The president addressed a national audience on Wednesday, but in back of the cameras and the rest of the press more than 100 somber White House staff members watched.

According to the paper's White House pool reporter, staff applauded "for a solid minute, at least" as three cried and others had "closed eyes or staring up at the sky." When the reporter spoke to a crying aide, she said "I'm just sad." In regards to the situation being bittersweet, another replied "I don't know about sweet."

In his remarks, Obama also vowed to work to ensure an easy transition to a Trump administration. And he added that, despite their differences, we are "all rooting for his success."
