11 Top Anti-Aging Tips from Holistic Health Experts

Father Time is an inevitable companion, but you can stave off the damage his sidekick Mother Nature does to your body — inside and out — by starting an anti-aging program today.

"It's never too late to begin," Dr. Alan Jacobson, a board-certified plastic surgeon and pioneer in minimally invasive plastic surgery, tells Newsmax Health.

Even small changes can make big differences, and results are often immediate — you don't have to wait weeks or months to enjoy improvements.

"Just drink more water today, or get a good night's sleep tonight, and look into the mirror tomorrow," Dr. Erika Schwartz, chief medical officer at the Age Management Institute in New York City, tells Newsmax Health. "You'll see and feel a difference."

Here are the top 11 anti-aging tips that will leave you looking and feeling years younger than the age listed on your birth certificate:

No. 1: Adjust your hormones. Physicians who are cutting-edge practitioners in the new specialty of anti-aging can boost your hormone levels. "Hormones open the door to anti-aging," Schwartz says. "Many of the aging issues both men and women face — weight gain, depression, and insomnia  — are related to decreasing hormone levels."

In her own practice, Schwartz assures women that the bioidentical hormones she recommends, such as estrogen, are chemically different from the hormones linked to health problems and pose no risks.

No. 2: Improve your diet. Concentrate on fresh fruits and vegetables, whole grains, low-fat milk, and seafood. Experts recommend five servings of fruits and vegetables every day, and three daily servings of whole grains along with two servings of fish every week. Deeply colored fruits and vegetables are anti-inflammatory and are rich in beneficial compounds, such as antioxidants, which slow aging. Avoid sugar, salt, saturated fats, fried foods, and limit red meats.

No. 3: Take supplements.
Boost your intake of antioxidants and anti-inflammatory supplements. "Inflammation is at the root of most chronic diseases," says Jacobson. Adding supplements such as vitamins C, D, E, and B, along with fish oil, L-carnitine, and CoQ-10 will boost hormone production and fight aging on a cellular level:

No. 4: Exercise.
The American Heart Association recommends 30 minutes of moderately intense activity — which includes brisk walking — five days a week. Keeping mobile also helps keep bones strong and prevents osteoporosis. "One third of people who sustain a significant fracture from osteoporosis die," says Jacobson.

No. 5: Be sun-safe. Staying out of the sun fights wrinkles and protects against skin cancer, but reduces needed vitamin D. "Protecting your skin from the sun is a double-edged sword," says Schwartz. "We've decreased the numbers of skin cancers, but we've increased the numbers of internal cancers. "Don't avoid the sun, but avoid sun burn," she says. "Spend 15 minutes a day in the sun without suntan lotion, then cover up."

No. 6. Drink more water.
Experts recommend eight 8-ounce glasses of water each day. Water helps hydrate your skin, delivers nutrients to your cells, and flushes toxins from your body.

No 7: Get enough sleep. "The quality of sleep diminishes with age, and many diseases arise because of poor sleep," says Schwartz. The National Sleep Foundation recommends getting seven to nine hours every night. Natural products can help. "L-theanine, an amino acid, helps you relax and doesn't leave you feeling drugged the next day," she notes.

No 8: Reduce stress. Stress causes an over-production of the stress hormone cortisol which leads to exhausted adrenal glands, increased body fat, a higher risk of high blood pressure, and other problems. "Stress is killing us," says Schwartz. "De-stress by using whatever methods work for you, whether it's walking your pet or turning off your computer."

No. 9: Moisturize and exfoliate.
Moisturizers hydrate skin and help make wrinkles less noticeable. In his personal practice, Jacobson matches skin care products to specific problems, such as fine lines and wrinkles, skin discolorations, and sun damage.

No. 10: Keep your weight in check.
"Gaining weight is pro-inflammatory," Jacobson says.

No 11: Stop smoking. In addition to causing countless health problems, smoking also accelerates aging of the skin by breaking down collagen. Smokers tend to have more wrinkles around the eyes and vertical lines above the lips. Get counseling (877-YES QUIT), use nicotine replacements — whatever it takes. Quitting smoking may be the most important anti-aging tip of all, says Schwartz.

"Life is like a huge puzzle with an infinite number of pieces," she adds. "No single thing will either make you or break you. Sleep a little more, move a little more — the steps aren't extreme and shouldn't be intimidating.

"If you take little pieces and tweak them, you can come up with a solution to the whole anti-aging puzzle that's great."
