Swiss scientists have identified a handful of new genes, out of a “haystack” of 40,000, that appear to be linked with longer, healthier lives.
The findings, by scientists with the University of Zurich, suggest the genes are involved in physical aging and manipulating them may help lead to longer lifespans,
Medical Xpress reports.
The research team, led by Michael Ristow, combed through the genomes of three different organisms (worms, fish, and mice) in search of the genes and all are found in humans.
The results of the study indicated that 30 genes significantly influence the aging process.
Ristow said the aim of the work is not necessarily to extend human life expectancy but to identify ways to slow the aging process so people can live healthier lives.
“The point is not for people to grow even older, but rather to stay healthy for longer," he said.
