Health officials have issued warnings about a new form of tick-borne virus that is worse than Lyme disease. Ticks in New York and Connecticut have been found to carry the rare, potentially life-threatening Powassan virus,
CBS News reports.
There is no treatment or cure for the infection.
Daniel Cameron, M.D., president of the International Lyme and Associated Diseases Society, those bitten by an infected tick can get the virus within a matter of minutes.
And while the symptoms are similar to Lyme disease, they are more severe — including seizures, high fevers, stiff neck.
Researchers with the Connecticut Agricultural Experiment Station said the Powassan virus is starting to show up in Bridgeport and Branford.
