Tuesday, 20 April 2010 07:14 AM EDT

Los Angeles Cardinal Roger Mahony, head of the nation's largest Roman Catholic archdiocese, criticized an Arizona  law that would target illegal immigrants, comparing it to "German Nazi and Russian Communist techniques" that forced people to turn on one another, according to a report in the Los Angeles Times.

"The Arizona legislature just passed the country's most retrogressive, mean-spirited, and useless anti-immigrant law," he wrote. "The tragedy of the law is its totally flawed reasoning: that immigrants come to our country to rob, plunder, and consume public resources. That is not only false, the premise is nonsense."
