PHOENIX (AP) — Sen. John McCain is asking a Senate committee for a hearing about a controversial federal operation that allowed more than 2,000 high-powered weapons to flow into Mexico.
McCain on Wednesday asked the Homeland Security & Governmental Affairs Committee for a hearing as soon as possible on the operation, known as "Fast and Furious."
McCain, a member of the committee, wrote in a letter that the panel must "ensure further damage from this operation does not persist."
Fast and Furious was a 2009 operation by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives. The agency allowed the weapons to reach Mexico from the U.S., which they said was part of an effort to go after drug cartel leaders.
Hearings about the operation have been held in the U.S. House.
