Conservative icon Phyllis Schlafly has endorsed Republican Rick Scott in his gubernatorial campaign against Alex Sink in Florida.
“Rick Scott was instrumental in informing and mobilizing the grass roots in the battle against Obamacare,” Schlafly said on Thursday. “He’s a proven conservative and a proven success as an executive.”
Schlafly rose to prominence in the 1970s when her Eagle Forum organization opposed the proposed Equal Rights Amendment. The Eagle Forum now has more than 80,000 members nationwide.
Schlafly also praised Scott’s running mate, Rep. Jennifer Carroll.
“Both are principled leaders and effective problem solvers Floridians need to protect this great state and keep it prosperous,” she said.
The Eagle Forum has also endorsed Allen West, the Republican candidate running against incumbent Rep. Ron Klein in Florida.
Schlafly’s endorsement of Scott came one day after he garnered the support of social conservative leader John Stemberger, chairman of the Florida Family Action PAC, who cited Scott’s commitment to defending the unborn and standing up for traditional marriage.
“This governor’s election is critical for the direction of life, marriage, and family issues in Florida,” he said.
“Alex Sink represents the radical, liberal policies that are out of touch with Florida’s families.”
