Thune: Obama’s Spending Freeze ‘Too Little’

By    |   Wednesday, 26 January 2011 11:02 AM EST

Like many other Republicans, South Dakota Sen. John Thune, a potential presidential candidate next year, wasn’t too impressed with President Barack Obama's proposal to freeze spending Tuesday, calling it "too little, too late," The Hill reports.

Thune, obama, cuts, littleIn an interview with Fox News after Obama’s State of the Union speech, Thune did say the president’s call for spending cuts represents "a movement in the right direction." But Thune is skeptical about whether Obama will stick to his guns and says the proposal doesn’t go far enough in any case.

"What he proposed was a freeze on spending for five years," Thune says. "But remember last year, he proposed a three year freeze in spending which we never saw. And a freeze at current levels only "locks in these dramatic increases in spending we've seen in the last two years."
