Nearly 2 Feet of Snow Falls in N.Y., New England

Wednesday, 28 April 2010 10:47 AM EDT

A late-season snowstorm has dumped up to 2 feet of heavy, wet snow on northern New York, Vermont and New Hampshire, cutting off power to thousands and closing some schools.

National Weather Service meteorologist Brooke Taber says record snowfalls were reported Tuesday and Wednesday at the Burlington International Airport. The snow is expected to end late Wednesday.

Utilities say about 30,000 customers are without power in Vermont and New York. Scattered outages have been reported in New Hampshire.

Large storms so late in the season are rare. Mark Breen, a meteorologist at the Fairbanks Museum and Planetarium in St. Johnsbury, says 22 inches of snow was reported in Malone, N.Y., on April 23, 1993, and 24 inches in Bellows Falls, Vt., on April 27, 1874.
