Mullen: Chance Gadhafi Could Cling to Power

Sunday, 20 March 2011 08:15 AM EDT

WASHINGTON (AP) — The top U.S. military officer says the international coalition can achieve its goals in Libya, but the chance that Moammar Gadhafi clings to power is "certainly potentially one outcome."

Adm. Mike Mullen, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staffs, says the goals of the military campaign in the North African nation "are limited and it isn't about seeing him go."

Mullen does say he thinks Gadhafi is more isolated ever as a result of the no-fly zone and an arms embargo. Mullen says the Libyan leader is "going to have to make some choices about his own future" at some point.

Mullen also tells NBC's "Meet the Press" that he hasn't seen any reports of civilian casualties as a result of the coalition's military operation and he says Gadhafi has resorted to using human shields.
