US Wants 'Free, Fair' Egypt Elections, Hillary Says

Sunday, 30 January 2011 09:11 AM EST

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton Sunday would not repeat earlier assertions that Egypt's government under President Hosni Mubarak is stable and repeatedly said that the United States wants to see Egypt transition into a democracy.

"America's message has been consistent. We want to see free and fair elections and we expect that will be one of the outcomes of what is going on right now," Clinton said during an interview with NBC's "Meet the Press."

Asked whether Mubarak's government is stable, Clinton said, "I'm not going to get into either or choices."
