Saturday, 09 October 2010 02:00 PM EDT

The Republican Party is going all-out in its pursuit to take over control of Congress, spending large amounts of money on races that normally would be considered too far out of reach. According to the Washington Post, the GOP is devoting large sums of cash to 89 midterm, elections.republican, party, target, races, fundraisingcongressional races -- 77 in the House and 12 in the Senate. By comparison, the Democratic Party is spending big bucks on only 49 congressional contests -- 43 in the House and six in the Senate.

For the Senate races, the figure is $1 million or more. For House contests, the sum is $100,000 or more.

According to the Post, the GOP is able to outspend the Democrats because of an influx of cash from special-interest groups.
