Billionaire developer and GOP presidential frontrunner Donald Trump has signed Americans for Tax Reform’s pledge to oppose any new taxes -- a move that puts him in a highly select group of conservatives who have vowed to cut spending and reform US fiscal policy in dramatic fashion.
“I Donald J. Trump pledge to the taxpayers of the United States of America that I will oppose and veto any and all efforts to increase taxes,” the pledge reads. But Trump added in his own writing “Except on China and other countries that have consistently taken advantage of our great country.”
The pledge was dated Tuesday, April 26.
In an accompanying letter, Trump wrote that “a President Trump will oppose and veto all efforts to raise taxes."
Since founding Americans for Tax Reform in the 1980s, Norquist has become one of the conservative movement’s most influential figures. That’s why an astonishing array of mostly conservative politicians — nearly 280 members of Congress, 13 governors and 1,250 state legislators – have signed ATR’s pledge to oppose any new taxes, Time magazine recently reported.
