The NAACP is honoring former White House "green czar" Van Jones with one of its highest awards, reports CNN.com.
Jones resigned from the Council on Environmental Quality in September of last year amid an outcry over his signature on a 2004 petition questioning whether U.S. officials knew about the Sept. 11 plot but allowed the attacks to happen anyway. He also was haunted by disparaging remarks he made about Republicans and an admission that the infamous Rodney King beating case radicalized him to the point of being a "communist," CNN.com reported Tuesday.
But NAACP President and CEO Benjamin Jealous sees Jones in a different light. He wrote an opinion article for CNN.com that called Jones "an American treasure" and possibly "the most misunderstood man in America."
Jones will be given the NAACP Image Award on Friday night.
