Conservative political commentator and best-selling author Ann Coulter tells Newsmax.TV that since President Obama “can’t run on his record” he has waged a campaign of “racial demagoguery” to beat GOP challenger Mitt Romney.
“They can’t dig up any divorce records on him, they can’t go through sealed child custody papers so that’s a tough nut for Obama to crack,” observed Coulter in an exclusive interview. “He can’t run on his record, as everyone knows, and I just realized this is going to be solid racial demagoguery this entire campaign season.”
Coulter, whose sharp wit, model good looks, and political insight make her a highly sought after guest on network and cable television, said that her realization that race would figure so prominently in the campaign led to her just-released book,
“Mugged: Racial Demagoguery from the Seventies to Obama.”

Despite President Obama’s overwhelming support among black voters, Coulter believes that Republicans have done far more for blacks than the Democratic Party.

“I don’t even know if people know this, that they were the party defending slavery,” she said of Democrats. “They were the party imposing Jim Crow laws. They were the party voting against Civil Rights laws, including the 1964 Civil Rights law.”
In her book Coulter describes how Democrats pivoted toward the civil rights movement “due to the electoral tide turning,” while the liberal media sought to rewrite history.
“They’re demagogues, they do control the non-Fox media and a lot of allegedly respectable, intelligent liberals on TV say things that [are] completely counterfactual to history and that just get repeated ad nauseam on television,” she said, noting that many of the first blacks elected to Congress were Republicans.
“Republicans, who went to the South after the Civil War, put much of the South under martial law and that’s why all of the first blacks elected to Congress were Republicans — and they just get whitewashed out of history. We never even hear about them,” Coulter charged. “But blacks were historically Republicans.”
While southern Democrats prevented blacks from voting in their states, President Franklin Roosevelt began to reach out to black voters in northern states as early as the 1930s.
“In the North, F.D.R. got blacks the same way he got the Irish — by giving them government jobs,” she asserted.
Even as late as the 1960s, Democrats continued to elect racist candidates in the South, according to Coulter.
“The racist Democrats in the South not only continued in the United States Senate, and there were a dozen of them — all liberal Democrats, not conservative Democrats — only one of them ever became a Republican, that was Strom Thurmond,” she said.

Coulter said that today’s Republican Party is doing a “great job” in reaching out to black voters, but “it’s incumbent on black Americans to read the true history of civil rights, the true history of the Democratic Party.”
She pointed to several court cases in recent years — particularly the O.J. verdict — which have helped reshape the black perspective in America.
“I think that was the best thing that happened to black Americans in this weird way because, at 10:01, October 3, 1995, when a mostly black jury, 100 percent democratic jury, voted to acquit an obviously guilty, black celebrity and then you saw blacks across the nation cheering the verdict. That was it,” according to Coulter. “White people said, ‘The white guilt bank is shut down. We are through. Hope O.J. was worth it.’”
Prior to that verdict she said that Revs. Al Sharpton and Jessie Jackson did most of the speaking for African-Americans in the U.S.
“For 20 years, you’d think the only spokesmen for black America was Al Sharpton and Jessie Jackson,” she explained. “Suddenly, there are dozens of them out there and it was just a much healthier society where people weren’t walking on egg shells and treating blacks like children.”
Consequently, she doesn’t think there is a much likelihood that blacks will take to the streets if they are dissatisfied with the George Zimmerman verdict as they once did over the Rodney King police-beating case in Los Angeles.
“I could be wrong, but I don’t think so,” she said. “We’re always being threatened with, ‘Oh, blacks are going to riot.’ No, I do not think black people will riot and I would add that Trayvon Martin’s parents have been the most dignified in this entire case, I mean, which people have forgotten about because it will fade away sort of the way the Duke Lacrosse case faded away.”
Despite the role that race is playing in the presidential campaign, Coulter said she does not think that President Obama’s relationship with Rev. Jeremiah Wright will rise to the same level it did during the 2008 election.
“It was fully aired in 2008 and people who care are aware of it,” she said. “People who voted for Obama, despite the whole Rev. Wright thing, are probably embarrassed now — or many of them are — and we’re certainly going for their votes . . . But is it relevant? Yes, it is. I mean it fits into this whole infantilization of black people.”
She said that the liberal media often plays the race card for Obama, and it figures prominently in his re-election chances.

“My sense of it had been that Obama doesn’t really raise the race issue,” she said. “He lets MSNBC and the networks do that for him and The New York Times . . . accuse us all of racism if we don’t support his election.”
She believes that the entire issue of race has been over played.
“I have a whole chapter on this nonsense about white people are going to kill the first black president. It’s utter madness,” Coulter declared. “Yeah, there used to be a lot of racists. They were all Democrats and they died. Now, you’ve got a few nuts. There are more anorexics and agoraphobics in this country, at this point.”
