In an attempt to battle the summer temperatures in Poland and "cool down" visitors, management of the Auschwitz concentration camp reportedly installed mist showers at the museum entrance, sparking outrage and horror among Jewish visitors,
The Washington Free Beacon reports.
"Israel visitors to the museum could not ignore the connotation of showers being put in place at a site where more than a million Jews were murdered by the Nazis in gas chambers during the Holocaust,"
Israel Hayom reported on Monday.
According to the Washington Free Beacon, many Jewish visitors have expressed that the decision to install the showers was in poor taste as they stand as a reminder of the more than 1.1 million people who were executed at the camp – many who were filed into showers filled with poison gas.
While the proprietors of the Auschwitz concentration camp — now a museum commemorating the Holocaust — installed the showers with only good intentions, Israel Hayam noted that moving forward the placement of the showers will be reassessed.
The report stated: "After an outcry on social media networks, the Auschwitz museum management said it had not meant to hurt the feelings of visitors and that the placement of the showers would be reassessed going forward."
