Americans are thinking for themselves rather than buying into all the political rhetoric spewed at them, conservative political commentator and author Dr. Ben Carson said Monday on
Newsmax TV's "America’s Forum."
"That's going to be the salvation of our nation," Carson said. "People, Americans, thinking like Americans, not thinking like Democrats, not thinking like Republicans, but thinking like Americans."

The
reality of the economy, in spite of how partisans try to spin it, is resonating with voters, he said.
"People are not quite as easily manipulated right now as they have been in the past," he suggested. "They're feeling things in their wallet, they're concerned about the future of their children and their grandchildren and they realize that if we continue down the same road that we're going those things are not going to work out for them. It's actually kind of refreshing to realize that the American people cannot be manipulated as easily as some people think they can."
People realize, Carson said, that "America was designed in such a way that the government would conform to the will of the people, not the other way around."
"We have exactly the opposite now," he said. "The government says this is what you should do, this is what you must eat, this is the healthcare plan that we designed for you and forget about what the people think."
Republicans have made "significant gains" in its "ground game" to get out the vote, but the GOP should not underestimate the Democrats, according to Carson.

"The thing that may affect the Democrats' ground game is enthusiasm," according to Carson. "There are a lot of people who actually are starting to think for themselves and rather than just listening to rhetoric and somebody saying oh this is great, the economy is great and you know they're looking out, so where's all these good jobs that you're talking about? What's all this good stuff that they're saying? How come I'm not feeling it?"
The GOP needs to do a better job of reaching out to the black community, refuting the liberal narrative that the party is racist.
"There's been so much negative press and they really haven't done a lot to refute it even though I don't believe it's true," Carson said. "You still have to come out with an aggressive game to refute all of the allegations and we have to start talking about ways to get people out of dependency. What the progressives have done over the last 50 years is create a huge dependent plan."
And the notion that
Voter ID laws are somehow racist is ludicrous, Carson added, noting that even homogenous nations have them.
"Every country that I've gone to in recent years to find out what do they do to prevent voter fraud and … every single one of them has some kind of voter ID and it's a national voter ID. So if they all have them, many of them are not countries that are diverse they're countries that are in Africa or South America, India and if they all require it, are they all racist?"
"It seems really absurd that anybody would even believe that you don't need voter ID to do something that is a potential component of the freedoms that we have in this country."
