NYT: NBC Finds Brian Williams Exaggerated Arab Spring Accounts in 2011

NBC News' internal probe of suspended anchorman Brian Williams has found another exaggeration by the newsman that was previously unreported — this time involving his account of protests in Cairo during the 2011 Arab Spring, The New York Times reports.

The Times reports there are discrepancies in the account given by Williams in February 2011 during an appearance with Jon Stewart on "The Daily Show."

Williams told Stewart that during deadly clashes in Tahrir Square between protesters seeking the overthrow of the Egyptian government, and a pro-government group on horses and camels, he'd "actually made eye contact with the man on the lead horse."

But the NBC News report on the clash didn't show Williams in Tahrir Square and subsequent reports said Williams was reporting from a balcony overlooking Tahrir Square, the Times reports, which jibes with footage broadcast and which he repeated in a Times interview last year.

Williams was suspended for six months in February after the military newspaper Stars and Stripes raised questions about his claim that the helicopter in which he was riding in the first Iraq war was shot down by rocket-propelled grenade fire.

Soldiers aboard the helicopter disputed that account.
