Trump Adviser on NAFTA: 'Things Should Go Well For Canada'

Stephen Schwarzman, an adviser for President Donald Trump, told Canadian reporters Monday the Trump administration's outlook for the Keystone XL pipeline are "expansionistic."

He also told Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and his cabinet the U.S. had a favorable view of Canada and "things should go well for Canada in terms of any discussions with the United States," referring to Trump's plan to renegotiate the North American Free Trade Agreement.

"Trade between the U.S. and Canada is really very much in balance and is a model for the way that trade relations should be."

Canadian energy exports will likely not be taxed a new cross-border tariff, Schwarzman said.

"People realize that the energy economy between Canada and the U.S. is very much integrated," Canada's Natural Resources Minister Jim Carr told reporters. "I think they're receptive to that argument."

The Keystone pipeline is a proposed 1,179-mile pipe which begins in Hardisty, Alberta, Canada, and extends south to Steele City, Neb. Canada has sought ways to transport more crude oil to the international market.

The Obama administration cut the project short in 2015 amid protests about the pipeline's impact on the fragile ecosystem in Nebraska's Sandhills region and concerns by environmental groups of oil spills along the route.
