Chinese Finance Minister: Trump 'Irrational'

By    |   Monday, 18 April 2016 11:02 AM EDT

GOP presidential front-runner Donald Trump is an "irrational type" and the United States "wouldn't be entitled to world leadership" with him at the helm, said Chinese Minister of Finance Lou Jiwei, according to The Wall Street Journal.

Trump has been vocal about his plans for dealing with China if he becomes president. He said China is in "total violation" of World Trade Organization policies and he would impose up to 45-percent tariffs to force China to change its trade policies.

China must "deal fairly and justly or we will not deal at all," said Trump, according to the Journal.

Trade economist Jeffrey Schott of the Peterson Institute for International Economics said "almost any across-the-board tariff increase would violate U.S. obligations" to the World Trade Organization.

Minister Jiwei also said the U.S. and China's "economic cycles are intertwined" and "we have more in common than sets us apart."

Jiwei is the most high-ranking Chinese official to comment on Trump.

Chinese blogger Guida Baihua said Trump is a "comedy goldmine," according to a Wall Street Journal report in March.

"What's going on? Could Trump's feelings toward China be more tangled or his logic more deranged?" said a report in the Global Times, a Chinese publication from the People's Daily Communist Party newspaper, according to the Journal.

In 2009 China put in place a stimulus package that has led to a bursting real-estate bubble. China's economy has slowed to 7 percent annual growth. In 2007 it recorded 14.2 percent growth. Now, the Chinese economy is showing signs of stabilization, said the Journal.

"China's efforts helped the world," said Jiwei, who has lobbied the U.S. to increase public and private investment, but said "we haven't seen much progress."
