Report: NYC Ebola Patient Lied to Authorities

Wednesday, 29 October 2014 07:55 PM EDT

New York City's first Ebola patient, Dr. Craig Spencer, allegedly lied to authorities initially, telling them he'd isolated himself in his apartment before becoming ill, then changing his story after detectives followed a credit card and MetroCard trail, The New York Post reports.

Spencer acknowledged riding the subways, eating out and bowling in Brooklyn after police confronted him with travel information revealed by the cards' use, the newspaper reports, citing unnamed sources.

Spencer, 33, returned to New York from Guinea on Oct. 17 and was rushed to Bellevue Hospital Center the morning of Oct. 23 with fatigue, nausea, and a low-grade fever.

In between, he rode on three busy subway lines, visited the popular High Line park on the city's West Side, ate at a Greenwich Village restaurant, and went for a 3-mile run before going bowling at an alley in Brooklyn the day before he was hospitalized.

The doctor had spent the month before his return treating people with Ebola as a volunteer for Doctors Without Borders.

"He told the authorities that he self-quarantined. Detectives then reviewed his credit-card statement and MetroCard and found that he went over here, over there, up and down and all around," a source said told the Post.

Spencer allegedly changed his story when a police officer "got on the phone and had to relay questions to him through the Health Department."

Officials then retraced Spencer's steps.

Spencer is in stable but serious condition at Bellevue Hospital. His fiance and two friends are in quarantine because of contact with him, but they have not developed symptoms, CNBC reports.
