Billionaire Donald Trump said the United States should not be sending troops to West Africa and that it was "morally unfair to the soldiers and to the soldiers' families." He said there would be "hell to pay" if any soldiers contract the virus, the
Daily Mail reported.
Trump, who has been a relentless critic of President Barack Obama's policies, said that Washington should not be sending soldiers to Ebola-affected countries while China and Russia sit on the sidelines, especially given that the country is "$18 trillion in debt," the Mail reported.
Up to 4,000 U.S. troops have been dispatched to Liberia in support of the Agency for International Development's efforts to create a medical infrastructure to contain the outbreak, according to the Pentagon. Officials have yet to formulate a
policy on monitoring the troops when they come back from Africa.
Maj. Gen. Darryl Williams, who led an advance team to Liberia, and his team members have been put under a
"quarantine-like" 21-day program in Italy pending their return to the United States, the Pentagon said.
"It's so sad. So sad," Trump said. "They'll send 4,000 soldiers over there, ill-trained, ill-equipped, never heard the word Ebola before this whole thing started a couple of months ago, and now nobody knows how they come back. And nobody knows whether they come back sick," the Mail reported.
Trump may be interested in the
Republican presidential nomination for 2016.
