Cruz Wants GOP House Members to Oppose Boehner Immigration Bill

By    |   Wednesday, 30 July 2014 05:01 PM EDT

Sen. Ted Cruz will meet with a group of House Republicans to try to persuade them to oppose House Speaker John Boehner's immigration bill, set for a Thursday vote, The Washington Post reports.

Several House members say they plan to attend the 7 p.m. Wednesday meeting in the Texas senator's office, among them Rep. Steve King of Iowa, Rep. Louie Gohmert of Texas, and Rep. Matt Salmon of Arizona. Salmon is a member of the House GOP's working group on the border issue.

Boehner's bill aims to make it easier to deport the tens of thousands of Central American children who have crossed the border from Mexico earlier this year.

Cruz's opposition to Boehner's plan lies in the fact that the speaker has declined to defund President Barack Obama's Deferred Action for Child Arrivals [DACA] executive order.

"The only way to stop the border crisis is to stop Obama's amnesty. It is disappointing the border security legislation unveiled today does not include language to end Obama's amnesty," Cruz said on Tuesday. "Congress cannot hope to solve this problem without addressing the fundamental cause of it."
