The Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee has issued an urgent appeal for funds in the wake of new predictions from statistician and forecaster Nate Silver that the DSCC calls "scary."

Silver is founder and editor-in-chief of ESPN's FiveThirtyEight, and his organization's new report predicts that Republicans are likely to pick up Senate seats in Montana, South Dakota, and West Virginia, putting them within three seats of a majority.

Six other seats that are held by Democrats or are open are "too close to call," according to FiveThirtyEight — Alaska, Arkansas, Colorado, Iowa, Louisiana, and North Carolina — and Republicans must win at least three of those races to gain a Senate majority, Silver's group observes.

A fundraising email from the DSCC says: "Nate Silver just released new projections, and the math is scary."

"If we're going to win, you can't wait a single second to act. Will you pitch in to stop a Republican Senate takeover?"

FiveThirtyEight notes that "Republicans, despite some close calls, nominated candidates mostly in the mainstream of the GOP, avoiding the fringe candidates who have hurt the party's electoral prospects in the past."

Nevertheless, the DSCC mailing warns: "We have just 72 days to make sure that the tea party doesn't take over our country."

"Every dollar you give today will go to protect our Democratic Senate majority."
