Carville: Best News for Democrats Is to Lose Obamacare

By    |   Wednesday, 28 March 2012 12:15 PM EDT

While the Obama administration is fighting tooth and nail to convince the Supreme Court to uphold its healthcare reform law, star Democratic strategist James Carville says his party will benefit most if it loses the case, Politico reports.

“I think that this will be the best thing that ever happens to the Democratic Party, because healthcare costs are gonna escalate unbelievably,” he told CNN’s Wolf Blitzer Tuesday night, referring to a possible Supreme Court rejection of Obamacare. “I honestly believe this. This is not spin. You know what the Democrats are going to say, and it is completely justified: ‘We tried, we did something, go see a 5-4 Supreme Court majority.’ ”

A ruling against the 2010 healthcare law will mean that the Republican Party is now responsible for the healthcare system, Carville says, according to Politico. And given all the problems in the system, that responsibility won’t stand the GOP in good stead, he says.

But Florida Democratic Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz, chairwoman of the Democratic National Committee, disagrees. “What would be great for Americans is if the justices uphold the Affordable Care Act, so that we can make sure that the Republicans aren’t allowed to drag us backward to the days where insurance companies are making the decisions for what’s best in terms of your healthcare,” she told CNN, according to Politico.
