A new crisis along the U.S.-Mexico border "is starting to resemble the summer border surge of 2014," a spokesman for some 17,000 patrol agents reported this week.
"We are not nearly at the numbers we were last year, but it looks like we are in the opening stages," agent Chris Cabrera, spokesperson for the National Border Patrol Council (NBPC),
told Breitbart.com.
With spring temperatures beginning to warm, Cabrera said that the number of women, children, and incomplete family units attempting to cross the border has begun to rise again — just like last year.
"We had two groups equal a little over 70 in one hour today. These were women and children. We’ve also seen a lot of children traveling alone," said Cabrera, who works at Local 3307 in the Rio Grande Valley in southern Texas.
Cabrera said that instead of trying to sneak by border patrol agents, many of the women and children are seeking them out. That may seem strange to the average American, but Cabrera said that it’s a sign of things to come.
"When the women and children start seeking out agents, we know there is word spreading in their home countries that they can come and be set free," he explained. "This is really the mark that indicates a coming crisis."
Shawn Moran, NBPC vice president and spokesperson, also spoke out recently about border security
in a radio interview with The Laura Ingraham Show.
"Stories about the border surge decreasing is an outright lie, to say the border is more secure is false," he said last week. "This administration is not securing the border and numbers are still very high."
The NBPC also reported over the weekend that a patrol helicopter was fired upon Friday from the Mexican side of the border near Laredo. Multiple rounds penetrated the aircraft, forcing an emergency landing.
"Thankfully no agents were hurt in this incident," Brandon Judd, NBPC president, said in a statement following the incident. "We ask that everyone keep our agents in their thoughts and prayers as we continue to prevent drugs, crime and individuals intending to do harm to our citizens from crossing our border."
