Anti-Christie PAC Closing as Jersey Governor's Campaign Founders

A super-PAC called Stop Chris Christie is shutting down, saying the New Jersey governor’s campaign for the Republican presidential nomination is so underwhelming that opposition is no longer necessary.

“We looked at the polls and all the indicators seem to be showing that Chris Christie is going nowhere fast,” Tom Bjorklund, treasurer of the political-action committee, said in interview. “It’s always difficult to make the case for stopping someone who isn’t doing well.”

In the realm of super-PACs, Stop Chris Christie was insignificant; Bjorklund said it raised only $1,300 since being formed in November and never purchased advertising. It was set up not by Democrats but by some Colorado Republicans at the behest of conservative Tom Tancredo, who lost the gubernatorial primary last year. He claimed the Republican Governors Association, which was chaired by Christie, funneled money to a group that attacked him.

Christie, 52, has struggled to crack the top tier of Republican contenders for the 2016 nomination. In recent weeks, the field of 17 hopefuls has been dominated by billionaire real- estate developer Donald Trump, and Christie is behind 10 other Republicans, based on the RealClearPolitics average of the latest national polls.

Samantha Smith, a spokeswoman for Christie’s presidential campaign, declined to comment on the PAC.
