Donald Trump: 'People Love' Steve King

By    |   Sunday, 19 October 2014 11:00 AM EDT

Billionaire real estate investor and reality TV star Donald Trump attended a fundraiser on Saturday for Iowa Congressman Steve King, calling the conservative Republican "a smart person with really the right views on almost everything," The Des Moines Register reports.

"He's done an amazing job," Trump said of King, adding that the two don't even need to compare notes when it comes to issues. He cited the fact that both think there should be a travel ban on people from countries with Ebola virus outbreaks.

"You know him from Iowa, but I know him from throughout the country, and he's respected all over the country," Trump told a press gathering. "It's my great honor to be here today to endorse and to support Steve King. People love this man right over here."

King has held his House seat for the past 11 years, and is facing Democrat Jim Mowre, a 28-year-old Iraq War veteran. Mowre raised more money than King early in the year, and polling is mixed, with most polls showing King in the lead. King only recently began airing TV ads.

Trump, who toyed with running for president as a Republican in 2012, was asked if he has similar aspirations for 2016.

Trump said he wanted to see who is running once the November 4 midterms have passed, and would make a decision sometime in early 2015.

Whoever the next president is, he or she has to be "very smart and very tough," he said.

"We need a great one. Because we're so far behind the eight ball, good isn't good enough," Trump said. "We need a great president next time."
