An online forum for Islamic State (ISIS) terror group supporters is advocating "lone wolf" bomb attacks in New York City's Times Square and other tourist spots in Las Vegas and Texas with homemade bombs, reports say.
One post even includes a guide to building pipe bombs with easily obtained materials like match heads, sugar and Christmas lights,
Vocative reports.
Vocativ translates the post as "To the Lone Wolves in America: How to Make a Bomb in Your Kitchen, to Create Scenes of Horror in Tourist Spots and Other Targets."
In it, the writer encourages attacking Times Square and Las Vegas in particular, but also says tourist sites in Texas and metro stations throughout the United States also would be good targets, Vocativ reports.
"There are no credible, specific threats to the city at this time based on the latest intelligence," New York Police Commissioner William Bratton told
The New York Post.
"We’re quite concerned, as you would expect, of the capabilities of ISIS, much more so than al Qaeda … to use social media to try and spread their recruitment efforts to try and inspire," Bratton said.
"We’re focused on it, and I believe, we are as prepared as any entity could be to deal with threats," he added. "But the reality is that we are living in a new era of potential terrorism."
One law enforcement bomb expert told Vocativ the bomb making directions are basic – and potentially lethal.
"This is a viable [bomb] recipe," the bomb expert told Vocativ. "It happens to be accurate stuff. The person has a working knowledge of explosives, and it’s consistent with what we’ve seen before out of the al-Qaeda and the Arabian Peninsula and their publications."
The message was written three weeks ago but resurfaced last Saturday, when the Islamic State group released a video of the beheading of a British aid worker
David Haines, Vocativ reported.
