Sources close to the Gingrich campaign are telling
Fox News that the former House Speaker and Texas Gov. Rick Perry are in preliminary talks about becoming a ticket before the August GOP convention.
Gingrich is purportedly hoping that a pre-determined ticket will unite certain elements of the GOP, particularly Tea Pary groups, evangelicals and the very conservative voters that liked Perry and make up the core of the Republican Party.
Perry's people were mum on the subject. "Gov. Perry thinks Newt Gingrich is the strongest conservative to debate and defeat President Obama and truly overhaul Washington. The speculation is humbling but premature."
Meanwhile, Gingrich's opponents for the GOP nomination accused Gingrich of trying to persuade voters in ultra conservative Alabama and Mississippi on the eve of the primaries there. A senior aide to Rick Santorum told Fox Gingrich was just trying to generate a buzz for his campaign.
Romney's advisors said it was focused on the primaries and declined comment.
