Obamacare “has to be ripped out by its roots” and the Republican Party has the resolve to do so,” House Speaker John Boehner said Sunday on CBS’ Face the Nation.
Boehner said the Supreme Court decision to uphold the law is shocking and is sending American in the wrong direction.
“The idea that the federal government can mandate that the American people purchase a product is shocking to me,” he said of last week’s ruling. “All it really does is strengthen my resolve…to repeal this awful law, which is increasing the cost of health insurance for the American people and making it harder for small businesses to hire new workers.”
He said while some of Obamacare’s provisions are sound, Republicans believe in a “common-sense, step-by-step approach” to replacing the law.
“This is government taking over the entire health-insurance industry,” Boehner said. “The American people do not want to go down this path.”
When host Norah O’Donnell asked whether Mitt Romney, who, as governor of Massachusetts, initiated a similar health-insurance program and an individual mandate in the state, has a credibility problem with Republicans, Boehner answered, “Gov. Romney understands that Obamacare will bankrupt our country and ruin the best healthcare-delivery system in the world.”
“When it comes to Obamacare, that’s what elections are for,” he added.
