Republicans on the House Judiciary Committee asked the Department of Justice this week to appoint a special counsel to investigate whether Democrat Hillary Clinton's campaign colluded with the Obama administration last year.
The lawmakers sent a letter to Attorney General Jeff Sessions and Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein, in which they requested that an outsider be appointed to investigate several issues — including why former Attorney General Loretta Lynch wanted the FBI to call its Clinton email investigation a "matter" and what was discussed during a clandestine meeting between Lynch and former President Bill Clinton on an airport tarmac last summer.
"While we presume that the FBI's investigation into Russian influence has been subsumed into special counsel Robert Mueller's investigation, we are not confident that other matters related to the 2016 election and aftermath are similarly under investigation by special counsel Mueller," the letter reads.
"The unbalanced, uncertain, and seemingly unlimited focus of the special counsel's investigation has led many of our constituents to see a dual standard of justice that benefits only the powerful and politically well-connected.
"For this reason, we call on you to appoint a second special counsel to investigate a plethora of matters connected to the 2016 election and its aftermath, including actions taken by previously public figures like Attorney General Loretta Lynch, FBI Director James Comey, and former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton."
The letter cited Comey's congressional testimony, in which said Lynch wanted the bureau to play down its Clinton probe.
Days after Lynch met with Bill Clinton, Comey announced the investigation was closed and he would not recommend charges be brought against Clinton for her use of a private email setup while she was secretary of state.
Judiciary Committee Chairman Rep. Bob Goodlatte, R,-Va., listed 14 items to which he is seeking answers from the DOJ.
Rep. Jim Jordan, R-Ohio, is a member of the committee and said in an interview Thursday he wanted a special counsel appointed.
"We hear all this talk about Russian influence in the election," Jordan said. "How about the Obama government's influence in the election?"
Rep. Adam Schiff, D-Calif., said Friday the Judiciary Committee's call for a special counsel is likely coming from the White House.
"This letter from the Judiciary Committee is very concerning," Schiff said. "It's an amplification of the president's tweets."
